Politicians on both sides this election season have been assuring Americans that small business is the backbone of our economy. Congress and President Obama put the proverbial money where their mouths are by passing and signing the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act in April 2012.
Since then, those in the government, private sector and media have debated how effective the act will be. Aimed at encouraging funding for new small businesses and startups, the JOBS act allows for new businesses to get money from crowdfunding to grow the initial capital needed to get started.
